GLA:D™ - Hip and knee osteoarthritis program

GLA:D™ - Best first treatment for Hip and Knee Osteoarthritis

Education and exercise will help you manage symptoms

What is GLA:D?

GLA:D® (Good Living with Arthritis: Denmark) is an education and exercise program developed by researchers in Denmark for hip and knee osteoarthritis.

  • This program includes neuromuscular exercises, enabling you to understand how your joint functions in relation to your body.
  • After the program you will have more stability in the joint, as well as knowledge of how to continue the exercises at home.
  • It is suitable for mild, moderate and severe osteoarthritis of the hip or knee.
  • Research has shown that this program can reduce symptom progression, reduce pain and improve function.

GLA:D™ Education sessions

hip-knee-physio-jennyOur GLA:D™ Australia accredited physiotherapists will deliver two education sessions which will help you understand more about osteoarthritis and introduce you to the program.

  • You will learn practical solutions to manage your hip and knee osteoarthritis symptoms, so you know what to do, what not to do and why.
  • Education, exercise and weight loss (if indicated) are all first line treatments which all osteoarthritis sufferers should have access to. This is why we offer the FREE education sessions so you can understand more about your condition.

If you would prefer to attend the online GLA:D education session conducted through La Trobe University please call the clinic for details.

What next?

This program is suitable for anyone with hip or knee pain. Your physiotherapist will first assess your suitability for the program, as for some people initial movement retraining in the pool may be a better first step. The program is also suitable for post-op hip and knee joint replacement rehabilitation. From the Danish study, many participants reported the program helped them delay surgical intervention for their hip or knee osteoarthritis. A referral from your doctor is not required. You may be eligible for medicare rebated sessions as part of the program if your GP recommends this.
