What is GLA:D?

GLA:D® (Good Living with Arthritis: Denmark) is an education and exercise program developed by researchers in Denmark for hip and knee osteoarthritis.

  • This program includes neuromuscular exercises, enabling you to understand how your joint functions in relation to your body.
  • After the program you will have more stability in the joint, as well as knowledge of how to continue the exercises at home.
  • It is suitable for mild, moderate and severe osteoarthritis of the hip or knee.
  • Research has shown that this program can reduce symptom progression, reduce pain and improve function.

What next?

This program is suitable for anyone with hip or knee pain. Your physiotherapist will first assess your suitability for the program, as for some people initial movement retraining in the pool may be a better first step. The program is also suitable for post-op hip and knee joint replacement rehabilitation. From the Danish study, many participants reported the program helped them delay surgical intervention for their hip or knee osteoarthritis. A referral from your doctor is not required. You may be eligible for medicare rebated sessions as part of the program if your GP recommends this.
